“Despite us all living here – we all learned something new about our fantastic city and its rich history and we visited buildings and places that some of us didn't even know existed! Sue was a great guide – informative, interesting and funny and the 2 hours just flew by.”

“Just to say thank you for an excellent tour last Wednesday. We have spoken to several of the people who joined us and they have all given a big thumbs up! We were all impressed with your knowledge and you made it so interesting and well timed. With a group of 30 U3A'ers, it was a challenge for you to keep us all under control !!”

“Sue, our guide, was upbeat, fun and had an amazing local knowledge. She was willing to take questions and didn't appear to have any kind of script just a clear passion to share what she knew about Manchester. At 2 hours long it was by far one of the most comprehensive bus trips that we've been on.”

“THANKYOU---- for last nights very enjoyable and educational Ghost Walk through the back streets of Manchester. We found the whole experience enjoyable, fascinating, and entertaining. The highlight was certainly viewing the hidden, inner courtyard of the Town Hall its history, and learning that it had been used for film and TV settings.”

“I am writing to you to thank you so much for your very excellent guidance of our group yesterday. The entire group has expressed their appreciation of a very enjoyable and informative morning. Several folk who thought they knew Manchester said that they had learnt facts they did not know before -- some of whom had grown up in Manchester!”

“A huge THANK YOU to you both for showing us around Manchester and Liverpool. We all had a great time and it was so interesting to hear all about the different places we visited. Everybody complimented you on your wealth of knowledge and your enthusiasm. You both spoke clearly and my students were pleased that they could understand almost everything. A special THANK YOU from me for helping to make my weekend much easier and of course a great success. It was a pleasure working with you.”

“I just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU for all your help at our conference in Manchester last month. From the pre-arranging to the actual event you really were a pleasure to work with! So knowledgeable, friendly, flexible and polite are only a few of the comments we received regarding you and your tours as well as myself and Rachel experiencing this ourselves. I really do hope we have other opportunities to work with you in the future and I for one will certainly be recommending you.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Biospheric project walking tour, thought Sue our guide was great, enthusiastic and energetic as well as knowledgeable.”

“I just wanted to email and thank you for the fabulous tour you gave us last Sunday. The students were enthused and I thought the balance of your tour in terms of information given out and number of sites visited, worked perfectly. The Radisson and your talk there was my personal highlight. Let's hope money is found for a proper Peterloo memorial.”

“Thank you so much for the guided tour you gave to our overseas guests. They really enjoyed the information you shared regarding our city (even the people who live in Manchester thought it was very informative and interesting). It was a pity about the Robbie Williams concert and the traffic but this did not affect the wonderful time my guests said they experienced.”

“Sue was superb, she took the time and effort to speak to both our [disabled] boys and include them during every step of the walk. It doesn’t happen very often where someone takes the time to acknowledge or speak to the boys. She took the time to ask them at the end if they had enjoyed themselves although they can’t speak she included them. Hats off to the guide.”

“Our tour guide Sue was wonderfully helpful and informative. Very smiley and lovely person :D”

“I just thought I’d send a quick message to thank you once again for the tours last week. As expected and as ever, feedback on the tours has been overwhelmingly positive, with students commenting particularly on the quality of the commentary.”

“Thanks again for a great time on Saturday; we really enjoyed the musical tour of Manchester we have been telling everyone about it”

“The walk was very good, informative interesting, seeing areas I never knew existed in Didsbury and learning the fantastic stories behind them!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer tours in languages other than English?

Yes, we can offer walks in French, German, Italian and Spanish.

What is the maximum group size?

For walking tours, the maximum group size is 25 people. However, if your group is larger than this we can easily provide more guides to accommodate everyone.

For panoramic tours, one guide is sufficient for the entire coach.

Where is the tour starting point and what is the itinerary?

The tours start wherever you want! Manchester is a very compact city and easy to walk around on foot. We can meet your group at their city centre hotel and end the tour at a museum, restaurant etc of your choice.

Walking tours would typically include highlights of Manchester such as the Town Hall, Cathedral, John Rylands Library and the Royal Exchange but the exact itinerary is entirely flexible.

In addition to the city centre, coach panoramic tours would usually cover The Quays (MediaCityUK, Lowry, Imperial War Museum North), the two major football clubs, university district and the old cotton mills.

Can you offer themed tours?

Yes. For example, we can offer tours on the Industrial Revolution, Music, Architecture, Science, WW1, Pub Tours... that is just for example. We can also focus on specific areas e.g. Castlefield, The Quays, Ancoats and the Northern Quarter.

What is the cost?

Hiring a private guide for up to 2 hours costs £100. The half day rate (up to 4 hours) is £140, and the full day rate (up to 9 hours) is £220.

There is a small supplement for tours in languages other than English, and for unsociable hours. Please enquire.

Do you have your own transport?

No, but we have good relationships with local coach companies and transport operators so if you need transport for your guided tour we can help organise this.

What is the difference between a Blue Badge guide and a Green Badge Guide?

Both types of guide are trained to the same high standard and are registered with the Institute of Tour Guiding. Green Badge guides are qualified to take tours within Manchester, whilst Blue Badge guides cover the whole of the North West region.

How do I become a Tour Guide?

Official Tour Guiding courses are accredited by the Institute of Tour Guides (ITG).

See the ITG website for further details - http://www.itg.org.uk

There are currently no plans for a Blue or Green Badge course in Manchester but do keep an eye on the ITG website, as any future courses would be announced there.

I have a disability, are the tours suitable for me?

All tours are wheelchair accessible (any exceptions will be highlighted). Printed commentary information can be provided for customers with hearing difficulties. Assistance dogs are welcome. We will do our best to accommodate everyone - please email, call or text to discuss any access requirements.
